1/10/2024 0 Comments Sleepy hollow state park![]() ![]() ![]() There are a few open sites next to each other that are great for groups, and others tucked away behind vegetation for a more private experience. The sites vary in size and level of privacy. It offers paved sites, a modern bathhouse, and a playground. Sleepy Hollow does have a campground, open from April to October. But that didn’t stop us or the other hardy souls we encountered – including a group of around 15 folks riding their fat-tire bikes across the frozen lake! We happened to visit on one of the coldest and windiest days of the year (at that point - it got worse!). In the winter, the park remains open for activities such as hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and even snowmobiling if conditions are right. At 410 acres, Lake Ovid is perfect for a few hours of floating around, watching for wildlife, getting a tan, and enjoying nature. One of our favorite summer activities at the park is kayaking. (A fun low-key race if you’re into that type of thing!) I even participated in an annual running of “The Legend” half-marathon race held in early August. Last summer while training for a marathon, we visited Sleepy Hollow a couple times just so I could train on the trails. Some of the trails are multi-use, so you’ll need to be mindful of your surroundings and right of way. The park includes 16 miles of hiking and biking trails and 12 miles of equestrian trails. You can play on the sandy beach, enjoy a picnic, or have a family reunion at one of the pavilions. In the summer you can swim, fish or boat in Lake Ovid (note: it is a no-wake lake). Today, Sleepy Hollow offers a multitude of year-round activities. Crane, as a nod to the fictional character in the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. In the end, they named it in honor of local resident I.B. When it came time to name the park, all the local villages wanted it to be named for them. Unlike most state parks that are built around natural features, Sleepy Hollow was built from scratch. It was created as part of a state project to “offer central Michigan residents outdoor and water-based recreation in the lake-less region.” This entailed buying up homesteads and farmland, clearing and grading the land, building a dam, and creating a man-made lake. The park opened in 1976 and encompasses more than 2,600 acres. Sleepy Hollow is located about 30 minutes north of Michigan’s capital city, near the town of Laingsburg, Michigan. While I don’t think it’s my favorite, it’s definitely the perfect family park. Now that we’ve discovered all it has to offer we go there quite frequently. Yet, until two or three years ago I don’t think I’d ever been there. Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.Sleepy Hollow State Park is the closest state park to our house, only 18 miles away. Take Fido for a well-deserved playtime and enjoy the simple things life has to offer. Whether you're visiting Sleepy Hollow State Park in the summertime or in the winter time, you can have fun by trying all sorts of recreational activities and discover the joy of being surrounded by trees and breathtaking landscapes. It takes one small gesture to make a difference, right? Cleaning after Fido is essential to keep the park neat and tidy. An important aspect to consider is the fact that there are no waste bags available on site, so you need to bring some from home. They can socialize with other furry friends, hike, sniff, and have a blast.ĭue to their unpredictable behavior, pets must wear a leash during their entire trip at this park. Camping season opens on March 30th and closes on October 21st, but cabins are available all year round. Sleepy Hollow State Park is pet-friendly and dogs usually love this place. Regardless of your preferences, at Sleepy Hollow State Park you will have the time of your life.Įntrance fees may vary between $9 and $32, depending on your stay. Other available activities include swimming, fishing, canoeing or wildlife viewing. If you fancy winter sports, come back when the snow settles and try dog sledding. You could also get adventurous with horseback riding. During the hot summer days, you can discover the trails that take you through prairie grasses, hike, or bike the 16 miles pathway. The site features a 1,400 acres "no wake" lake and modern campsites to make your time spent in nature as convenient as is can be. The park offers all year round activities, suited for all ages and tastes. Sleepy Hollow State Park spreads over 2,600 acres and is one of the most beautiful parks in Michigan.
